Clinical Observation on Gastrointestinal Hemorrhage in Young Adults

Abstract

|
Fourty four patients with gastrointestinal Hemorrhage under the age of 24 years who admitted to this hospital from 1977-1979 were reviewed.
The most common cause of gastrointestinal hemorrhage was duodenal ulcer(40.9%), and other were gastric ulcer(27.3%), acut gastrits(13.6%) and gastric cancer(6.8% ),
The clinical symptoms of gastrointestinal hemorrhage were hematemesis in 41%, melena in 38.6% and combined in 20.4%.
The past history of gastric distress was found in 70.2% of total cases and of G- I hemorrhage in 10.3%. In melena of G-I hemorrhage 66.7% with medical treatment and 33.3% with surgical management.
The over all mortality rate was 12.3%.
